Haruo Aoki was born in Iketani in Yamakoshi Village, the birthplace of Nishikigoi. He liked Koi and he went to great lengths to be able to buy them. With his hard-earned pocket money, he bought 100 fry for 50 yen. That 50 yen turned into 1000 yen in the fall. That was a lot of money for a boy at the time and that made him very happy. From there Aoki started to focus on Koi and knew that he wanted to grow Koi later.

The Aoki family started breeding koi with metallic properties in the 1920s. A few decades later, through highly selective breeding, the Ogon emerged. The other metallic varieties were also grown from this variety. Although he has been breeding for over 35 years, he still considers it a hobby himself.
