Strange duck bites koi breeders, Katsumi Koi Farm (NNBC)
Katsumi is a bit of an odd one out. Firstly, the man speaks excellent English and furthermore he is incomparable with the average breeder in behavior and even appearance. I suspected that some Chinese (never say it out loud to a Japanese, that's a gross insult), Taiwanese or other kind of blood runs through his veins, but upon inquiry he turns out to be 100% Japanese. He has lived and worked a lot outside Asia, which has given him a somewhat more “western” manner (and size).
Katsumi is by the way the first name of this grower. It is very rude to use a person's first name in Japan unless you are family or a close friend. But yes, Katsumi has a good mouth and is a household name in Niigata. Fukushima (the family name) also took on a negative hue after the 2011 nuclear disaster. But actually we should address Katsumi as Fukushima san. The 2004 earthquake completely destroyed his home. The traces of the earthquake can still be clearly seen on a fault line just behind its outer cisterns. Katsumi was forced to build a new house. This does mean that he will have to work until well after his 65th birthday.
