The most experienced koi hobbyists are familiar with Sekiguchi Koi Farm. Masayuki Sekiguchi, grandson of founder Kosuke Sekiguchi, breeds fabulously good showa that have won many major awards.

The showa come from parent stock of Izumiya and Kanezo and are known to have an excellent kohaku pattern. The sumi often only really comes through a little later, which makes selecting young koi a difficult task for Sekiguchi.

Pay particular attention to the kohaku pattern, skin quality and body. The sumi will usually work itself out. Because Sekiguchi Koi Farm is not that big, it is not always possible to select fish here. If you can, don't miss a visit.
